Stadler to deliver up to 1,500 U-Bahn cars for Berlin

Bussnang TG/Berlin - Stadler has won a contract as part of a tender process to supply up to 1,500
U-Bahn train cars to the Berlin transport authority. The contract is worth up to 3 billion euro in total. This makes it one of the largest supply contracts of all time in Europe.

Stadler is replacing the fleet of vehicles used on the Berlin U-Bahn network. The Thurgau-based company emerged victorious from a tender process organized by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), which is the organization responsible for running public transport in Berlin. Stadler will supply the German capital with up to 1,500 train cars. The framework agreement, which is worth up to 3 billion euro overall, also covers the supply of replacement parts for a period of 32 years.

An unsuccessful bidder had initiated a review procedure. The Berlin Chamber of Appeal has now ultimately rejected this appeal. According to a Stadler press release, this now clears the way for the contract to be formally awarded and the binding order to be placed.

A component of the framework contract is a fixed minimum order volume of 606 train cars. From 2022, Stadler will supply 376 of these. An additional 230 units have been ordered already, although these will only be called in at a later date. In addition, up to 894 further carriages can be requested under the terms of the framework contract. The volume of the fixed orders totals approximately 1.2 billion euro. Stadler and the BVG are therefore continuing their partnership, as Stadler cars are already in use on the U1, U2 and U5 lines.

“We are very proud to have won one of the largest delivery contracts ever awarded in Europe and to be able to complete the order in Berlin for Berlin”, comments Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler in Germany, in the press release. He adds: “We have decided to bring forward our planned investments in the Stadler location in the German capital in order to create an optimal basis for the implementation of this major project”. Stadler will be investing up to 70 million euro in its Pankow location in East Berlin.
