Stadler commences operations at Salt Lake City welding facility

Bussnang/Salt Lake City - Stadler has opened a new welding facility for train car bodies at its site in Salt Lake City. Aluminum car bodies for trains in the USA will now primarily be manufactured locally. Stadler's share of local value added in the USA will also increase to 80 percent with this new plant.

(CONNECT) In future, Stadler Rail AG will primarily be manufacturing its train car bodies for use on the US rail network in the USA. On September 25, the global manufacturer of rail vehicles from Bussnang in the Swiss canton of Thurgau opened a car body welding facility at the Stadler campus in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the company announced in a press release. Up to the end of 2026, the expectation is that 20 new skilled jobs for people in the local area will be created. To begin with, Stadler is relying on the expertise of its welders and technicians from the competence center in Hungary to support initial operations.

At the celebratory event held to mark the opening of the new plant, the first locally welded aluminum car body was presented. The press release cites a speech given at the event by Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler North America: “We set out to build more than just trains. We’re building economic opportunity, stronger supply chains, and a future where American-made trains are synonymous with world-class quality”.

As part of the Buy America Act, Stadler has been obligated since 2016 to generate at least 70 percent of the value added for contracts financed with US taxpayer money in the USA. With the commissioning of the new welding facility, Stadler’s share of local value added will increase to 80 percent, as the company writes in the press release. ce/hs
