Bühler provides larval rearing technology to Hungary

Uzwil/Üllő - The Bühler Group is supplying insect technology to Hungarian insect producer Agroloop. Bühler’s rearing technology will help establish a sustainable animal feed production chain. By the end of 2024, Agroloop aims to produce 4,000 tons of animal feed ingredients incorporating insects at its new factory.

Bühler AG from the canton of St.Gallen is supporting Hungarian insect producer Agroloop as a technology partner. According to a press release, Agroloop has opted for Bühler’s “proven crate-based nursery and rearing technology” to enable production of over 25,000 tons of black soldier fly larvae. These will be turned into insect-based feed ingredients for the pet food, aquaculture and livestock sectors, making the livestock feed and feed supply value chains more sustainable.

The insect producer is planning to build a factory in Üllő, not far from Budapest Airport, where it aims to produce up to 4,000 tons of feed ingredients for the livestock industry annually by the end of 2024. Bühler's insect technology plays a key role in providing the framework and in determining the plant yield, enabling Agroloop to “enter the value chain with the highest standards,” says István Nagy, co-founder and CEO of Agroloop.

Insects are a good source of protein and can be produced in a sustainable way. “Insects can be reared on agricultural and food processing by-products, transforming these materials into high-quality protein,” explains Bühler in the press release. Andreas Baumann, Head of Market Segment Insect Technology at Bühler, sees the incorporation of insect ingredients in animal feed as “a compelling solution to the challenges faced by the livestock industry”. “We are very proud to be part of this pioneering project for the CEE region and delighted to see that our solutions will contribute to more sustainable feed supply chains,” he says. ce/heg
