ams AG to create 200 jobs for the sensor technology cluster

ams AG, an international provider of sensors technology solutions and analogue integrated circuits is set to substantially grow its Swiss operations in Rapperswil-Jona, in the canton St.Gallen. Originally hailing from Austria and listed on Switzerland’s SIX Swiss Exchange, the company is about to implement an expansion project in the St.GallenBodenseeArea (SGBA) that has been in the making for several years.

After initial studies in close collaboration with the cantonal Office of Economic Affairs and Labor St.Gallen, the “Kempraten“ lot in Rapperswil soon emerged as a promising candidate for ams’s extended operations. The site’s proximity to the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil (with the German acronym HSR), its high potential for talent transfer and technological cooperation, and the excellent support by local and cantonal authorities tipped the balance in favor of the Rapperswil location, according to Thomas Troxler, Director Engineering Division Sensor & Sensor Interfaces at ams AG.

Next steps were taken quickly: In the spring of 2016 ams purchased a suitable lot in Kempraten and launched an architecture competition for the new ams building. The company also announced the takeover of the photo sensor specialist Heptagon later in the year, in particular the company’s research center and staff of 80 in nearby Rüschlikon. In light of Heptagon’s acquisition, the new building in Rapperswil-Jona will be designed with a capacity for up to 250 employees and will initially also offer space for startups.

The productive and successful collaboration of ams, HSR and the economic development agencies will substantially and sustainably strengthen the „Sensors Valley“ sprawling from Lake Zurich to the Upper Rhine Valley and amplify the position of the St.GallenBodenseeArea within Switzerland’s leading „Sensors Cluster“.
