Airbus orders five Starrag machines for titanium parts
Rorschacherberg - Starrag's new S1250 HD 5-axis machining center for titanium parts has gone into series production. It is the only machine of its size with hydrostatic guides while its machining performance sets a world record, according to the company. Airbus has now ordered five of the product.
(CONNECT) The machine tool manufacturer Starrag describes its new concept, the Starrag S1250 HD, as a success. According to a statement from the company, the Starrag S1250 HD 5-axis machining center with hydrostatic guides, which recently went into series production, is ideal for machining titanium. Airbus Aerostructures has already ordered five of these machines for its Varel site in northern Germany.
In performance tests conducted by Starrag at its main plant in Rorschacherberg in the Swiss canton of St.Gallen, the machine achieved what the company considers almost unbelievable results: using a carbide cylindrical milling cutter developed by Starrag itself and designed for high-performance milling, the specialists achieved a cutting performance of 1,516 cubic centimeters per minute. In another statement and a video, Starrag said this was a world record in heavy-duty titanium components machining.
Compared to the prototype, for the final design the company's engineers made both the beds and the column even stiffer. To further increase rigidity and damping, they also enlarged the contact surface of the hydrostatics. The rotary table, with its torque of 25,000 nanometers and a clamping torque of 32,000 nanometers, “perfectly meets titanium machining requirements”, according to Starrag. The machine is also equipped to meet future requirements of modern processes.
“Friction-free, wear-free, extremely rigid, and highly damped” are the features Starrag attributes to its new product. These properties are reportedly responsible for its record-breaking performance in heavy-duty machining. According to the statement, the process can be used across a range of industries. For example, companies in the aerospace, automotive, medical technology, and other sectors can use it to shorten cycle times, increase productivity, and improve precision in their own manufacturing processes, writes Starrag.
Starrag will be one of the exhibitors in the SWISS Pavilion at the Dubai Airshow 2025. The aviation trade fair is taking place from 17 to 21 November. ce/mm
