Zwicky awarded for solar power system

Müllheim-Wigoltingen - E. Zwicky AG has won this year’s Swiss Solar Award in the category of Energy Systems. The family-owned company based in the canton of Thurgau was recognized for the development is its primarily vertical solar power system for silo towers. Across a period of 10 months, the solution has generated 340 megawatt hours of electricity.

E. Zwicky AG, the family-owned firm from Müllheim-Wigoltingen in the canton of Thurgau that specializes in products made from cereals, pulses, seeds and kernels, has been awarded a prize in recognition of its 85 percent vertical solar power solution, further details of which can be found in a press release. In specific terms, Zwicky has won the Swiss Solar Award 2022 in the category of Energy Systems. “We are proud to be able to call one of the largest vertical solar systems in Switzerland our own”, comments Zwicky CEO Kurt Krucker in the press release. In total, more than 30 winners were chosen.

Over 2,200 square meters of solar panels have been installed for the solar system, which can be seen from far away, on the silo towers measuring some 60 meters at the company’s hulling mill in Müllheim-Wigoltingen. As the sun rises lower in the sky during the fall and winter months, solar power can be exploited particularly effectively by the predominantly vertical installation, Zwicky explains in the press release. In the first ten months of operation, the system has already generated 340 megawatt hours of electricity.

Zwicky uses all of the electricity generated at the silo towers for its own production processes. “Zwicky’s vision is to grow into an energy self-sufficient company”, explains Krucker. In order to achieve this goal, the company now intends to implement further projects in the area of sustainable energy. Relevant planning applications have already been submitted for these, according to the CEO.
