SwissPrimePack awarded prize

Rapperswil/Altstätten SG - The FUTUR foundation has awarded a prize to SwissPrimePack. The company manufactures the environmentally friendly cups for coffee machines developed by the Institute of Materials Technology and Plastics Processing.

In conjunction with the Institute of Materials Technology and Plastics Processing (IWK) at the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil (HSR) , SwissPrimePack has been awarded the FUTUR prize. The FUTUR Foundation (Förderung und Unterstützung technologieorientierter Unternehmungen Rapperswil) aims to promote and support technology-focused companies from its base in Rapperswil in the canton of St.Gallen. It has now awarded its recognition prize for the 16th time, as detailed in a press release. This year, the WoodCup – a cup for use with coffee machines that features a reduced carbon footprint – was awarded the prize.

The two award winners from the St.GallenBodenseeArea joined forces to create the WoodCup. While the Institute of Materials Technology and Plastics Processing is responsible for development, SwissPrimePack handles manufacturing and distribution. However, the partnership’s ultimate goal of creating a biodegradable cup for use with coffee machines has not yet been achieved. Nevertheless, the initial stages of development have been completed. In this regard, SwissPrimePack has already produced and sold a total of 200 million cups made from a polystyrene compound with wood fibre infill.

In addition to its headquarters in Altstätten in the canton of St.Gallen, SwissPrimePack also maintains a branch Niederuzwil (also SG). In total, the company employs 120 staff to manufacture packaging for the food industry.
