Starrag announces world record in titanium machining

Rorschacherberg - Starrag states it has set a world record with its new S1250 HD machining tool for titanium structural parts. The new 5-axis machining center has achieved an unprecedented performance of 1,516 cubic centimeters per minute.

(CONNECTStarrag has claimed a world record for its new S1250 HD 5-axis machining center for titanium parts in a statement and video: in performance tests conducted by Starrag at its main plant in Rorschacherberg in the canton of St.Gallen, milling specialists achieved a cutting performance of 1,516 cubic centimeters per minute using the carbide Cylindrical Endmill Cutter Ø40 R1.24 (18 teeth), which is designed for high-performance milling.

The prototype with hydrostatic guides had achieved an up to three times higher cutting performance compared to the previous version of the machine with roller bearings. For the series machine, Starrag engineers made additional modifications to further increase removal rates and reduce tool wear. Specifically, they made both the beds and the column even more rigid, and additionally succeeded in enlarging the contact surface of the hydrostatics, further increasing rigidity and damping.

Modifications were also made to the rotary table, which is now designed as a gearbox version. With its torque of 25,000 nanometers and a clamping torque of 32,000 nanometers, “it perfectly meets titanium machining requirements”, according to Starrag. The S1250 HD titanium machining center is also equipped to meet future requirements of modern processes.

According to the statement, the process can be used across a range of industries. For example, companies in the aerospace, automotive, medical technology, and other sectors can use it to shorten cycle times, increase productivity, and improve precision in their own manufacturing processes. At the time of its market launch, Airbus Aerostructures had already ordered five of the machining centers for its Varel site in northern Germany.

Starrag will be one of the exhibitors in the SWISS Pavilion at the Singapore Airshow. The international aviation trade fair is taking place from 3 to 8 February. ce/mm
