Starrag makes gas turbine housings for Siemens Energy Indianapolis

Rorschacherberg/Indianapolis - Starrag is developing and manufacturing housings for mobile gas turbines on behalf of Siemens Energy Indianapolis. Produced in small quantities, these housings are used in the SGT-A05 and KB7X turbines. With this project, Starrag can expand and strengthen its process expertise.

(CONNECT) At its Aerospace & Turbine Competence Center (ATCC) in Rorschacherberg in the Swiss canton of St.Gallen, Starrag AG is manufacturing housings for mobile gas turbines on behalf of Siemens Energy Indianapolis from the US state of Indiana. The housings are used in the SGT-A05 and KB7X gas turbines and are being produced in small quantities. Following the project’s launch in 2025, Starrag has already delivered the first batch. The second batch is now in production, according to a statement.

Markus Ess, Chief Technology Officer for Starrag’s HPS Business Unit, highlighted that Starrag is not actually a parts supplier. However, the contract with Siemens covers the entire process chain, he said, enabling Starrag to expand and strengthen its process expertise in turbine manufacturing. Another reported benefit is that, because this order will use the existing STC 1250MT and STC 800MT machines at the ATCC plant, there is no need to invest in new machinery.

Starrag supplies the housing components for gas turbines to the US as ship sets – in other words, a complete set of housings for a single turbine. Starrag and Siemens have agreed on two deliveries, each consisting of five ship sets. The first has already been delivered.

Typically consisting of several stages, gas turbines require a range of different housing components, explains Starrag. The SGT-A05 gas turbine needs six components, while the newer KB7X generation includes an additional housing. “Each of the rotationally symmetric housings must meet different requirements and varies in size and geometry,” reads the statement. “The materials used also vary depending on prevailing temperatures.”

Starrag AG is one of the exhibitors in the SWISS Pavilion at the Farnborough International Airshow. The global aerospace industry trade show takes place every two years in southern England. In 2026, it is being held from 20 to 24 July. ce/nta
