SPAR to use electric trucks for transportation

St.Gallen - The SPAR Group Switzerland will in future deliver food from its central warehouse to the branches using electric trucks. The company actually first used a hybrid vehicle for deliveries nearly ten years ago.

“Consistently reducing harmful emissions and the strain of heavy goods traffic has been a defined goal in distributions logistics of the SPAR Group Switzerland for many years”, the retail group headquartered in the St.GallenBodenseeArea explains in a press release. Nearly ten years ago, SPAR put its first truck with a hybrid drive system into operation. Moreover, the company also has as many containers as possible transported by rail.

In the future, the aim is for food to be transported “totally emissions-free and almost silently” from SPAR’s central warehouse to its branches, the company announced in the press release. To this end, the SPAR Group Switzerland has acquired a 360 horsepower, electric-drive truck from MAN. This is set to herald “a new era for an even more significant reduction in CO2 emissions”.

The range of the electric truck stands at approximately 180 kilometers, but can actually be increased further by the recovery of brake energy, SPAR states further in the press release. The company is planning to use its new electric truck daily: in Appenzellerland each morning and then in Thurgau in the afternoons. SPAR explains that this could save 19,000 liters of diesel and avoid 50 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
