Macardo Swiss Distillery presents innovative barrel storage

Amlikon-Bissegg TG/Winterthur – The whisky-maker Macardo Swiss Distillery has presented its new barrel store to the public for the first time. The system was developed by students from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences and is based on the use of modern technology.

The new barrel store at Macardo Swiss Distillery is an “absolute world first”, according to a press release issued by the whisky-maker based in the St.GallenBodenseeArea. Each of the 450 steel beams used for the barrel storage system is equipped with sensor technology. The design is based on plans devised by the School of Engineering at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), which had set about developing the barrel store of tomorrow. And now, the Fasslager 4.0, as the innovative system is known, has become a reality, seamlessly combining traditional craftmanship with technology from Industry 4.0 in the process, further details of which can be found in the press release.

The data captured by the sensors serve to control the microclimate in the barrel store. In this way, even the smallest deviations and fluctuations can be recorded. Appropriate control measures ensure that Macardo products age optimally, as alongside temperature, air pressure and humidity are additional influence factors that can determine the quality of the end product.

The development by the ZHAW students can also be used in other areas. For example, the sensors could also contribute valuable data for cheese and honey production processes.

Macardo Swiss Distillery has been headquartered at a new building complex in Amlikon-Bissegg in the canton of Thurgau since 2020. In addition to whisky, the company also produces gins, rums and vodkas, as well as other specialties.
