Altenrhein airport receives certification

St.Gallen – The St.Gallen-Altenrhein airport has received European certification for organisation, safety and operation, making it the third Swiss airport to be certified in accordance with European regulations.

The St.Gallen-Altenrhein airport has been certified according to the requirements of the European Aviation Safety Airport (EASA). With the certification, the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) certifies on behalf of the European authorities that the St.Gallen-Altenrhein airport fulfils the European regulatory requirements for organisation, safety and operation, according to a statement.

The EASA guidelines define how an airport is to organise refuelling of airplanes, the use of the fire brigade, periodic monitoring of runways and approach lighting, snow clearing and other matters.

Switzerland’s participation in the EASA means that the airports in Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Lugano and St.Gallen-Altenrhein are now affected by the corresponding EU regulations, explains FOCA. Lugano and Geneva have already been certified, and now also Altenrhein. Zurich and Bern are expected to follow by the end of 2017.

The regional airports in Sion, Grenchen, Les Eplatures, Samedan, Ecuvillens, Lausanne, Birrfeld and Bressaucourt will continue to be certified according to the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
