Starrag supplying two gigantic portal machines to Denmark

Rorschacherberg - Haco has ordered two gigantic portal machines from Starrag in the canton of St.Gallen. They will go into operation at a new subsidiary plant of the Danish machine factory in Rødekro. The machines will carry out the final stage of construction for components in wind power plants.

Starrag has received a large order “on an unprecedented scale” for two portal machines from its long-standing Danish customer Haco, as the manufacturer of high-precision machine tools from the St.GallenBodenseeArea reported in a press release. Specifically, Starrag will supply two gigantic portal milling machines, which will be able to machine rotor housings with a diameter of more than 10 meters following the final stage of construction.

Construction is already under way on a gantry portal milling machine at Starrag’s subsidiary plant in Bielefeld. The machine has a clearance of 12.6 meters in between the stands, while the gantry axis travels over a distance of 14 meters. Once this has been delivered by the end of this year, Starrag will manufacture a portal turning machine with adjustable table that has a swing diameter of up to 15 meters for Haco in Bielefeld.

The Danish sub-contractors to the wind-turbine industry plans to use the new super-sized pair of machines not at its headquarters in Barrit but at a new subsidiary plant in Rødekro. This is where Haco’s customer Valmont SM is based. Up to now, the supplier of steel components for the wind power industry has transported welded blanks to the Haco plant in Barrit for mechanical finishing via heavy goods transport. Hubert Erz, who is supervising the project for Starrag, explains that the new plant avoids “having to use many additional kilometers of heavy goods transports, which would not only obstruct road traffic, but also contribute to environmental pollution”. hs
