Wyon AG: EY Entrepreneur Of The Year hails from the SGBA

Here’s a reason to celebrate: One of the four winners of the 20th EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Award in Switzerland hails from the St.GallenBodenseeArea (SGBA). Towards the end of October, ten EY jurors unanimously named Paul J. Wyser, founder and longtime CEO of Appenzell-based Wyon AG, this year’s awardee in the category «Industrial/Hightech/Life Sciences».

EY even coined the term „Lord of the Mini-Batteries“ for the entrepreneur and developer of very small lithium ion batteries for medical devices, that have made him the undisputed market leader in the field of cochlea implants. Other markets might follow this example soon: Wyser and Wyon have been working on rechargeable batteries as a replacement for current commercial, non-chargeable zinc-air batteries in hearing aids and devices.

Paul J. Wyser founded Wyon AG 18 years ago – today the fast grown company already employs a workforce of 108, 29 of whom work in in development alone. It doesn’t come as a surprise then, that Wyon will open an annex for the production of rechargeable batteries at its headquarters location in Steinegg by next year. The expansion also is a clear commitment to Switzerland and the SGBA as manufacturing locations. And in a similar vein of involvement with the local business scene, Mr. Wyser’s Wyon Foundation awards an annual prize for the best graduates of the canton Appenzell’s vocational colleges. All of which led the EY jury to its forceful endorsement of the entrepreneur: «Paul J. Wyser is an Entrepreneur Of The Year par excellence. Humble, persistent, showing great leadership skills, forward-looking, risk-taking, authentic and of the highest integrity, he has actively changed his immediate and extended environment for the better.»

EY’s Entrepreneur Of The Year Award is the most comprehensive and globally renowned prize for entrepreneurial impact and success. The competition follows identical procedures and criteria and takes place in more than 140 cities and 60 countries worldwide where EY has a presence. Always in early summer, an independent jury will determine the World Entrepreneur Of The Year among all the country winners from the year before. Perhaps Paul Wyser, and with him the entire SGBA, will be winners once more.
