Stadler expands in U.S. market

Bussnang TG – The train manufacturer Stadler is building its own plant in the U.S. Located in Salt Lake City, the plant will accommodate around 350 workstations and will initially build 16 bi-level trains.

When Stadler received an order in 2015 to build eight FLIRT trains, it used the infrastructure of the former Union Pacific Plant in Salt Lake City. But after the St.GallenBodenseeArea company received a major contract last year for the construction of 16 bi-level trains, it realized it would need a larger production space. To this end, the company is now building its own plant in Salt Lake City with an investment of around $50 million.

The ground-breaking ceremony, which was held only a few days ago, was attended by high-ranking politicians from Salt Lake City and the state of Utah. In fact, the widespread support from the city and Governor’s office was one of the reasons behind remaining in Salt Lake City, where Stadler already has a workforce of 115 well-trained workers. The new plant is designed to accommodate around 350 workstations, but can be upgraded on a modular basis at any time.

“It makes me proud that we were able to lay the cornerstone for our new American plant in Salt Lake City today,” Stadler CEO and owner Peter Spuhler said in a statement.

“Our choice of location was made easier by the region’s excellent economic and political conditions, as well as the support we have received from the various authorities. We can now be confident in our ability to supply the U.S. train market with the most cutting-edge rail vehicle technology.”
