Stadler receives record order from the USA

Bussnang TG - Stadler Rail is to deliver 127 METRO trains to Atlanta for 600 million US dollars. This is the largest order of vehicle units so far in the company history of the Thurgau-based rail vehicle construction company.

Stadler Rail has emerged victorious among international competition to win a major contract from the USA. The rail vehicle construction company will deliver a total of 127 METRO trains to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MATRA), as outlined in a press release. Moreover, the contract includes two options of 25 additional trains each. The contract is valued at 600 million dollars. The new trains are intended to service the world’s largest airport Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, with the first trains ready for operation from 2023.

For Stadler, this represents that first major METRO contract in the USA and is the largest order of vehicle units in the company’s history. Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler US, commented in the press release: “After the order for double-deck trains for Silicon Valley, we are especially pleased that our METRO trains are now being considered for service in the network to the world’s largest airport”.

Stalder’s METRO trains typically operate in multiple tractions with up to four vehicles. Each train offers 128 seats in addition to “generous standing area”. Charging stations and WIFI connection are also provided, among other features.

Stadler plans to assemble the trains in Salt Lake City, Utah. In so doing, Stadler would be fulfilling the contractual obligation to generate at least 60 percent of the project’s value added in the USA.
