Masters in Medicine approaches

St.Gallen – The cantonal assembly unanimously approved the plan to train doctors at the University of St.Gallen. The proposal will go to the voters on 10 June. The university has also opened a new visitors’ centre.

Students will be able to obtain a Masters degree in Medicine at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) beginning in the autumn term of 2020. According to an HSG statement, the students will complete their Bachelors degree at the University of Zurich (UZH) as part of a cooperative agreement between the HSG, UZH, the Kantonsspital St.Gallen and the University Hospital Zurich.

The Joint Medical Master St.Gallen is meant to address the current shortage of medical professionals in Eastern Switzerland. “Against that background, the provision of a Masters course in Medicine in St.Gallen and the training of our next-generation doctors represents a gain for all the cantons of Eastern Switzerland,” writes the HSG.

Now that the St.Gallen cantonal assembly has unanimously approved the proposal, it will go to the voters on 10 June.

A newly opened visitors’ centre in the Main Building at the University of St.Gallen will provide information to the general public about the planned Joint Medical Master, as well as an overview of the university and its regional impact.

“The creation of our Visitors’ Corner is also, and particularly, an invitation to our guests from the city and the region to discover and use the HSG as a public space – as a place for encounters, conversations, and transparent and hopefully also exciting information,” Ulrike Landfester, Vice-President for External Relations, said in a separate statement.
