HSG inaugurates School of Computer Science

St.Gallen – The University of St.Gallen (HSG) has established a new School of Computer Science and now officially inaugurated the new faculty. In the new school, future technologies and innovations in the world of computer science are to be developed.

The canton of St.Gallen is seeking to become the leading location for the digitalization of business models, as detailed in a press release issued by the University of St.Gallen. For this reason, the canton initiated an IT education offensive at all school levels. With the founding and subsequent inauguration of the School of Computer Science at HSG, the “first visible result” of the offensive can now be seen, comments Stefan Kölliker, Minister for Education of the canton of St.Gallen, in his speech at the inauguration ceremony. The school “marks the Canton’s presence in the field of digital education far and wide and has the potential for excellence at the top of the cantonal education offensive”, he adds.

From St.Gallen, or Silicon Gallen as the press release nicknames the region, projects are now set to be launched in tandem with businesses in Eastern Switzerland, with the aim of reinforcing HSG’s regional roots. At the same time, however, the University of St.Gallen should also “become an internationally visible IT center”, according to Barbara Weber, Founding Dean of the School of Computer Science (SCS-HSG).

Study courses at the SCS-HSG are intended to cover all aspects of computer science, while at the same time offering a distinct focus on economic connections, explains Bernhard Ehrenzeller, President of HSG. In this way, the hope is that Eastern Switzerland would become a hub for specialists in computer science that have received a business-oriented education.

The first Master’s degree courses at the new faculty are set to begin in the fall semester of 2021. The students can then choose to either focus on Data Science or Software and Systems Engineering. An undergraduate course is also expected to be launched, starting in the fall semester of 2022.
