Hugelshofer e-semitrailer delivers parcels for Swiss Post

Frauenfeld – Hugelshofer, a logistics group from Eastern Switzerland, has been using an electric semitrailer since this summer. As part of a pilot project on alternative drive concepts, it is delivering parcels for Swiss Post.

Hugelshofer, MAN Truck & Bus Switzerland AG and a third company have outfitted a Hugelshofer semitrailer with an electric drive, giving the 40-tonne vehicle a range of 150 to 200 kilometers. The semitrailer has been driving on Swiss roads since June, and, as part of a pilot project, Hugelshofer is using it to transport parcels for Swiss Post at night.

The Thurgau-based transport company wants to gain experience in the field of alternative drive concepts through the pilot project. While greater efficiency and lower emissions have always been part of the company’s culture, it takes time to be able to determine if the electric motor will prevail as a drive concept, says Martin Lörtscher, Hugelshofer CEO. “Range, driving behavior, weather conditions – there are still many questions that need to be answered,” explains the company.

The pilot project is of interest to Swiss Post because it wants to expand its electric fleet, which currently consists of 11 electric delivery vans, according to a Swiss Post press release.
