«Zero Star Bed» under starry skies: Vacancy in the SGBA’s Appenzellerland

Conceptual art project and a night under the starry sky high up over the St.GallenBodenseeArea (SGBA): That’s the idea behind «Null Stern Bett» or «Zero Star Bed». This summer, the hotel room sans-brick-and-mortar, i.e. without walls and ceiling, is situated right in front of the Alpstein scenery in the Appenzellerland region. The double room «Zero Star Bed» is actually a detached suite sitting on the Göbsi peak (1200 meters above sea level) near the town of Gonten –  smack on the border between the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden (AI) and Appenzell Ausserrhoden (AR).

Eastern Switzerland based conceptual artists Frank and Patrik Riklin along with hospitality consultant Daniel Charbonnier, the co-founder of the «Null Stern – the only star is you» brand, opened the detached double suite in early June 2017 for a three-month summer run.

In the beginning of «Zero Star Bed» was the „World’s First Zero Star Hotel“, a hotel room in a windowless Swiss fallout shelter. One year later, in 2009, the idea’s own brand «Null Stern – the only star is you» was created in the town of Teufen, AR. In 2016 the Riklin brothers presented a pastoral version of the project in the Safien Valley, and this incarnation now returns to the Appenzellerland region: Following the maxim „consistent real estate liberation“ without walls and ceilings, the Riklin brothers actually declared the valleys of Switzerland as their “rooms” with the sceneries as wallpapers. Switzerland as a country should be seen as „imaginary building“ of the new «Zero Star Hotel», according to the Riklins.

More than 1‘300 RSVP requests
Once again, the bucolic version of the «Zero Star Hotel» garnered much praise and excitement around the world. More than 1000 media outlets have reported on the art installation in the past ten months. One result of this prolonged international coverage was an overwhelming demand for a night in the exclusive «Zero Star Bed» including your own personal butler. Currently there are 1300 RSVP requests pending for the «Zero Star» room.

Booking is open as of now!
Booking process has been opened to the public with immediate effect. «We assume that the bed is usually booked for one night », says Urs Berger from Appenzellerland Tourism AR. «Theoretically, a longer stay is possible, too.» A classic hotelier is not included in the «Zero Star» plan: The entire region plays host. The „room“ is managed by locals and transformed into an experience characterized by unique local hosting culture in situ. Guests will be taken care of by a local butler knowledgeable about the region, and breakfast is included. In case of inclement weather there’s a mountain lodge nearby whose walls and ceilings offer shelter in 200 meters distance.
