From the SGBA to Mombasa: Aquaswiss wins USD 48 million contract for water treatment plant in Kenya

Hailing from Frauenfeld, a city in the canton Thurgau in the St.GallenBodenseeArea (SGBA), Aquaswiss is a great example for the region’s innovative technology and success in the global marketplace: Founded only ten years ago, this SGBA company has just won a contract over 48 million Dollars, according to news reports.

By the year 2020 Aquaswiss will have developed, financed and installed an ecological desalination plant in the port city of Mombasa, Southern Kenya. Aquaswiss’ water treatment is based on a reverse osmosis desalination technology that improves energy efficiency by up to 20% compared to standard treatment plants, and will pump up to 30 million liters of drinking water per day.

Innovation is not limited to the product, but also extends to the business model of the company with a staff of around fifty. In addition to providing funding for the project, Aquaswiss will also operate the seawater treatment facility for 25 years. In return it will receive the proceedings from the sales of drinking water at a fixed price for that time. This arrangement allows for planning security and a fair pricing system which all but guarantees that the valuable liquid remains affordable for the less affluent residents of the region – a plan that has also garnered Aquaswiss the support of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (Bafu).

Clean and affordable drinking water doesn’t only reduce the risk and spreading of dangerous infectious diseases, says Sanjeev Varma, AquaSwiss’ CEO. It also helps secure sustainable economic growth for the population in its entirety – not least thanks to know-how from the SGBA.
