Bühler to make insect processing more efficient

Uzwil SG – The Bühler Group is working together with Alfa Laval via its Bühler Insect Technology Solutions. The two companies plan to develop modern, modular plants for the processing of insects.

Alfa Laval is a specialist in heat transfer, separation and fluid handling, as Bühler reported in a press release. Bühler Insect Technology Solutions (BITS) has signed an exclusive partnership contract with the Swedish company. The process engineering specialist from the St.GallenBodenseeArea intends to combine its strengths with those of Alfa Laval in order to offer tailored solutions for processing insects as food.

Owing to their modular structure, these solutions for heat transfer, solid and lipid separation and fluid transfer can be integrated seamlessly into larger insect plants. As demand increases, insect producers will be able to easily ramp up production. “With the combined offering, we are in a unique position to provide the best insect processing solution in the market with unmatched product quality and safety,” commented Sumit Pingle, Vice President Agro & Protein Systems at Alfa Laval, in the press release. BITS and Alfa Laval will also cooperate on further research and development, marketing and after-sales services.

“We are convinced that insects will play an important role in making our food system more sustainable,” said Dieter Voegtli, President of the Global Sales and Service Organization at the Bühler Group. “With installation works for the first industrial-scale insect plant in Europe nearing completion, we will soon have an operating proof point of the viability of our insect process technology in an industrial setting.”
