Stadler Rail: Firmly on a track to success, will invest CHF 86 million in new production site in the SGBA

Founded in 1942, and today headquartered in Bussnang, in the St.GallenBodenseeArea (SGBA), the Swiss rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler is arguably a poster child for technology and engineering made in Switzerland. As evidenced in its annual report for 2017, Stadler is also one of its most successful, owing its success to new product lines such as the Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train FLIRT or the Speedy Suburban train KISS: With a staff of 7600, the number of employees increased to its highest level ever, turnover stood at 2,4 billion Swiss Francs, incoming orders amounted to nearly 3,5 billions – Stadler’s business in Western and Central Europe, Northern Africa, Russia and the United States is obviously on a roll.

But the year after its 75th anniversary Stadler also has made a remarkable commitment to the Swiss market, particularly with an investment of roughly 86 million Swiss Francs in the SGBA: In early July Stadler and local authorities held the groundbreaking ceremony for a new production site and center of expertise for double-decker units in St.Margrethen in the canton St.Gallen. The new site is to expand and partly replace the aging production plant in Altenrhein (also in the SGBA). Thanks to the investment, Stadler plans to have 35'000 m2 of manufacturing and storage area as well as 5000m2 of office space and meeting rooms ready to move in by 2020. The new construction will facilitate process optimization and increased efficiency for the production and engineering divisions of KISS double decker trains and other vehicles assembled in Altenrhein to date.

The investment underlines Stadler’s commitment in the business location Switzerland and the production site in the SGBA’s border region of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and Germany. „It shows that we believe in the business location Switzerland and continue to defend it“, said Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Stadler.
